This action comes in response to a series of recent incidents related to helicopter operations in the region, leading the DGCA to implement stricter safety protocols.
Safety investigations are currently in progress to determine the factors involved, including mechanical issues, operational mistakes, and weather-related difficulties.
Challenges of Flying in Uttarakhand:
Helicopter operations in Uttarakhand are notably complex due to the tough geography, which features narrow mountain valleys, high-altitude helipads, and rapidly changing weather conditions.
Flying at low altitudes under such circumstances allows little room for error, making the adherence to standard operating procedures (SOPs) essential.
DGCA’s Key Actions:
Suspension of Kestrel Aviation’s operations pending the outcome of the investigation.
Initiation of special audits and increased surveillance for all helicopter operators offering shuttle and charter services in Uttarakhand.
Real-time monitoring of helicopter activities using live camera feeds from helipads such as Kedarnath, provided by the Uttarakhand Civil Aviation Development Authority (UCADA).
A temporary suspension of two helicopter operators for two hours today due to violations of SOPs regarding parking protocols.
A review is currently being conducted to determine whether helicopter operations to the Char Dham should be restricted for safety reasons.
Why pilgrims use helicopters:
The Char Dham Yatra is regarded as one of the most sacred pilgrimages in Hinduism, encompassing four high-altitude shrines: Kedarnath, Badrinath, Gangotri, and Yamunotri. Pilgrims undertake this journey to seek spiritual purification, moksha (liberation), and divine blessings.
Situated in the Garhwal Himalayas, these sites are accessible from April/May to October/November, attracting millions annually, despite the challenging terrain and unpredictable weather.
The pilgrimage routes can be arduous and time-consuming by road, which has led to the increased popularity of helicopter services, particularly among elderly and time-sensitive pilgrims.
