India is increasingly recognized not only for its whiskies, single malts, or gins but also for its rums on the global stage. In a significant milestone for Indian rums to assert their place in the international rum market, Camikara 3YO, the nation’s first pure cane juice aged rum, has become the first Indian rum to secure a gold medal at the Rum & Cachaça Masters Awards 2025 in London. This accolade positions India at the forefront of premium rum producers and heralds a new phase for spirits crafted in India.

The rum’s victory against traditional strongholds like Martinique, Jamaica, and Barbados challenges the long-held belief that Indian rums are merely affordable, molasses-based offerings that lack sophistication.

“There was a time when Indian rum didn’t feature in global discussions on premium spirits,” remarked Shalini Sharma, Head of Marketing at Piccadily Agro Industries, the producer of Camikara. “This achievement is more than just a medal; it signifies a proud moment for India. Camikara was founded on the conviction that India can deliver world-class spirits grounded in its own heritage and resources,” added Sharma.

The Rum & Cachaça Masters, held annually by The Spirits Business, stands as one of the globe’s most esteemed blind-tasting competitions focused on rum and cachaça. The 2025 edition featured a record number of submissions from leading rum-producing countries, evaluated by a panel of industry experts.

Camikara, which derives its name from the Sanskrit term for ‘liquid gold,’ has accomplished what once seemed impossible: an Indian rum, crafted in the Rhum Agricole style, competing on the world platform.

Camikara has revived India’s underappreciated legacy in sugarcane distillation. The brand’s success paves the way for a new premium segment within the Indian market and underscores the potential for Indian rums to reach world-class standards.
