In a significant achievement for Japan’s inbound tourism from India, May 2025 marked a historic high with over 43,000 Indian visitors recorded within a single month for the very first time. This milestone underscores Japan’s rising allure among Indian tourists, who are increasingly captivated by the country’s rich culture, stunning seasonal landscapes, and seamless travel experiences.

The increase in arrivals coincides with the Indian summer vacation period, following Japan’s Golden Week celebrations, thus creating an optimal travel opportunity. This timing facilitates better access to accommodations and services while offering pleasant weather and clear skies, perfect for sightseeing.

“May has indeed become an advantageous time for Indian tourists wishing to discover Japan,” remarked a tourism official in a press statement. “It combines excellent weather, rich cultural activities, and easy accessibility, making it a favored month for visitors from India.”

After a breakthrough year in 2024, when Japan saw approximately 233,100 Indian tourists, the tourism momentum has further accelerated in 2025. From January to May of this year, around 142,400 Indian visitors traveled to Japan, marking a 39.6% rise compared to 102,100 arrivals during the same timeframe last year.

This uptick in Indian tourist figures is attributed to the efforts of the Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO) Delhi office, which, along with its partners, has been vigorously promoting Japanese destinations and tailored experiences for Indian travelers.

Enhancing the enthusiasm for travel to Japan is a new initiative associated with EXPO 2025 Osaka, Kansai. In preparation for the international event, Japan has introduced a Digital NFT Art Collection Campaign designed to enrich travel through an interactive, technology-driven experience.

The campaign invites international travelers to collect geo-tagged digital NFTs (non-fungible tokens) tied to various sightseeing locations across Japan. These digital tokens unlock exclusive content and serve as digital mementos of the traveler’s journey. Participation is complimentary and open to all overseas visitors.

Those who collect these NFTs gain not only access to unique content but also a chance to receive exclusive souvenirs and memorabilia associated with EXPO 2025. The campaign promotes exploration beyond major urban areas, encouraging deeper regional tourism and allowing visitors to forge their own personalized digital memories of their travels.

With such innovative initiatives and a distinct upward trend in tourist numbers, Japan is rapidly establishing itself as a prime destination for Indian travelers, with 2025 poised to set new records.
