On November 19, two flights traveling from the Middle East to Sri Lanka were rerouted to the Thiruvananthapuram airport due to adverse weather conditions in Sri Lanka. One flight was operated by Turkish Airlines from Istanbul, carrying 258 passengers along with 10 crew members, while the other was a SriLankan Airlines flight from Dammam, Saudi Arabia, with 188 individuals onboard, including 8 crew members, as stated by Thiruvananthapuram International Airport Ltd (TIAL) in a press release.

Both aircraft arrived safely at the Thiruvananthapuram airport around 7 am and subsequently departed for Colombo at 8.38 am and 8.48 am, respectively, once the weather improved, according to TIAL.

In other news, the Delhi High Court on Tuesday inquired the Federation of Indian Pilots (FIP) to demonstrate willful disobedience and non-compliance regarding a judicial order by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation for not fully adopting the new flight duty time limitation (FDTL) regulations approved by the court earlier this year.

The court’s inquiry followed a statement from FIP’s counsel, who indicated that although the DGCA had committed to the high court in April to implement the FDTL norms gradually from July 1 to November 1, it was not allowing several airlines, including Air India and SpiceJet, to deviate from those norms.

“I can understand concerns regarding unreasonableness or discrimination, but today you are requesting this court to start contempt proceedings. I am asking again, where has there been willful disobedience or non-compliance? There was a directive, and the court ultimately states, adhere to the timelines,” Justice Amit Sharma remarked.

The DGCA’s counsel argued that it has the authority to provide exemptions for a period of six months, subject to review.

The court granted FIP time to present previous court orders and set the matter for a hearing on December 15.

The contempt petition was filed against the backdrop of the DGCA implementing certain relaxations in the FDTL framework, which included permitting additional night landings and extending duty time for two-pilot Boeing 787 Dreamliner operations.
