The MEA reported that individuals from India were enticed to Iran with fraudulent job offers or assurances of travel to other nations.
“The Government of the Islamic Republic of Iran has accordingly suspended the visa waiver facility available to ordinary Indian passport holders visiting Iran with effect from 22 November 2025. This measure is intended to prevent further misuse of the facility by criminal elements,” the MEA stated.
In efforts to boost tourism, the Iranian government launched the visa waiver initiative for citizens from over 30 countries, including India, in February 2024. The visa-free entry was applicable for a duration of 15 days once every six months and was not meant for employment purposes.
Criminals exploited this opportunity, misleading Indians into traveling to Iran under the pretense of job offers or opportunities. Upon arrival, many became victims of kidnapping, with criminals demanding ransom from their families.
“These individuals were duped into traveling to Iran by taking advantage of the visa waiver facility available for ordinary Indian passport holders. Upon their arrival in Iran, many were abducted for ransom,” the MEA noted.
The ministry has also advised citizens to exercise caution and avoid agents who guarantee visa-free entry or onward transit to other countries through Iran, as such offers may be fraudulent.
According to the new regulations, Indians must secure an Iranian visa prior to entering the country. This rule applies not only to those visiting Iran but also to individuals merely transiting through the nation on their way to other destinations in Central Asia.
Additionally, airlines have been instructed to verify that passengers possess a valid Iranian visa before allowing them to board their flights.
