MEA Launches Enhanced Passport Seva System and Unveils e-Passports MEA Launches Enhanced Passport Seva System and Unveils e-Passports
The Ministry of External Affairs has announced the successful implementation of upgrades to its Passport Seva ecosystem, introducing PSP V2.0, the Global Passport Seva Programme (GPSP V2.0), and a new e-passport for citizens both in India and abroad.

The Ministry stated that the enhanced Passport Seva Programme was rolled out on May 26, 2025, across all 37 Passport Offices, 93 Passport Seva Kendras (PSKs), and 450 Post Office Passport Seva Kendras (POPSKs). The global variant, GPSP V2.0, followed with its launch in Indian embassies and consulates around the world on October 28, 2025.

PSP V2.0 aims to create a digitally interconnected network involving all agencies related to passport issuance, focusing on efficiency, transparency, and convenience for applicants. Officials noted that the upgraded system features AI-powered chat and voice bots to assist users with form-filling and addressing grievances. A redesigned website and mobile application now provide functionalities like auto-filled forms, simplified document submission, and online payment options via UPI or QR codes.

The launch also marks the introduction of India’s new e-Passport, which the Ministry describes as a hybrid document that combines traditional paper elements with advanced electronic features. It includes an embedded RFID chip and antenna that securely store the passport holder’s data in accordance with International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) guidelines.

The information printed on the data page is also electronically duplicated on the chip, which enhances security and authentication. Going forward, all newly issued passports will be e-Passports, while existing non-electronic passports will remain valid until their expiration dates.
