Maharashtra operates five international airports in Mumbai, Pune, Nagpur, Shirdi, and Navi Mumbai. Nonetheless, the recently completed Navi Mumbai International Airport has yet to kick off international flight services, anticipated to launch in December 2025.
Currently, Kerala stands out as the only Indian state with international flights operating from four airports located in Thiruvananthapuram, Kochi, Kozhikode, and Kannur. This achievement underscores Kerala’s expanding global connectivity, bolstered by its flourishing tourism sector, robust trade relations, and a significant expatriate population, especially in the Gulf region. With these four operational international airports, Kerala sets a standard for regional air connectivity and international outreach within India’s evolving aviation landscape.

Trivandrum International Airport
Inaugurated in 1932, Trivandrum International Airport is the oldest in Kerala and one of India’s first. Situated in the state capital, it accommodates a diverse range of passengers including diplomats, tourists, and officials. The airport is instrumental in supporting key institutions like the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and Technopark, thereby enriching the region’s administrative and technological framework.
Cochin International Airport
Opened in 1999, Cochin International Airport is Kerala’s most bustling and internationally linked hub. It provides direct connections to Europe, the Middle East, and Southeast Asia. A trailblazer in sustainability, it is the world’s first fully solar-powered airport. Over time, it has evolved into a key gateway for international travel and cargo operations in South India.

Calicut International Airport
Situated in the Malabar region, Calicut International Airport primarily caters to travelers heading to the Gulf. Kannur International Airport
Opened in 2018, Kannur International Airport is the newest entry in Kerala’s aviation sector. It has markedly enhanced connectivity for the northern districts of Kannur, Kasaragod, and Wayanad. The airport is quickly establishing itself as a hub for tourism, commerce, and international trade, further solidifying Kerala’s standing in India’s aviation industry.
