This highlights how insurance data aligns with outbound travel trends.
The latest travel insights report from ACKO, derived from policies issued during the peak winter season, indicates that Indians prefer visa-friendly and experience-rich locations, with family travel emerging as the leading factor for overseas trips.
Thailand tops the list, thanks to its short travel time, affordability, and easy visa processes. Germany follows, attracting a larger portion of families and senior travelers drawn to Europe’s winter markets and festive offerings. Vietnam comes in third, benefiting from cost-effective travel and increasing interest from young professionals and students.
France and Italy round out the top five, heavily influenced by family and working professional travel.
The report reveals that travelers aged 30 to 49 represent the largest segment of multi-person trips across various destinations, highlighting the growing significance of family-oriented vacations. Young professionals aged 20 to 29 prefer short-haul destinations like Thailand and Vietnam, whereas students under 20 are increasingly active in markets such as Vietnam and the UAE.
Senior travelers over 50 constitute a larger share of visitors to long-haul destinations, including Germany and the United States.
Outbound winter travel is predominantly driven by urban centers, with Bengaluru, Mumbai, Delhi, Hyderabad, Pune, Chennai, Gurugram, Kolkata, Noida, and Ahmedabad witnessing the highest insurance issuances in December.
Family travel is the fastest-growing segment and holds the largest share of insured passengers during the winter season. Solo travel is also on the rise, particularly to locations like Thailand, the UAE, and the United States, while couple travel has shown stable growth, particularly in Southeast Asian markets.
Industry experts observe that the issuance of travel insurance has become a key indicator of international travel patterns, especially as many countries require insurance coverage for visa approvals and as international medical and trip disruption costs continue to escalate.
Travel insurance generally covers medical emergencies, trip cancellations, delays, lost baggage, and accidental injuries—risks that often increase during peak travel times.
Commenting on these findings, an ACKO spokesperson stated that this year’s winter travel reflects a growing preference for convenience and comfort, alongside an increasing understanding of the importance of reliable travel protection as overseas trips become more frequent.
