For those keen to catch the first blossoms, Okinawa is the initial destination. This southernmost prefecture typically begins to bloom as early as February, creating a serene backdrop for hanami against vibrant turquoise waters and lush subtropical vegetation. By late March and throughout April, most of Japan reaches the peak cherry blossom season, with parks, castles, and riversides hosting various seasonal festivals.
Travelers who miss the initial wave can venture further north. In Hokkaido, blossoms can last into May, followed by expansive displays of “Shiba Sakura,” pink moss flowers resembling cherry blossoms that create stunning carpets of color. The moss pink usually peaks in May, while lavender fields begin to bloom from July onward, establishing Hokkaido as a diverse floral destination throughout multiple seasons.
JNTO points out several lesser-known viewing areas for those wishing to escape the large crowds, including Okinawa, Hokkaido, the Tohoku region, the Nikko Kaido Cherry Blossom Trail in Tochigi, Yoshino in Nara, and Mount Noro in Hiroshima.

The area around Mount Fuji beautifully merges blossoms with iconic sights. The Sagamiko Sakura festival, anticipated to take place from around February 27 to April 12, features approximately 2,000 cherry blossom trees in Sagamiko Mori Mori Amusement Park, alongside seasonal attractions and camping amenities. From around April 11 to May 24, the Fuji Shibasakura festival near Lake Motosu will showcase over 800,000 pink moss plants set against the majestic backdrop of Mount Fuji.
For a more reflective experience, Minobu Sakura, typically held from early to late April, is centered at Kuonji Temple, a historic temple over 800 years old in the Minobu mountain region known for its Shidare-zakura (weeping cherry blossoms). Visitors can enjoy a seven-minute ropeway ride to a scenic viewpoint and prayer area overlooking the picturesque blooms.
With the blooming period extending over several months and across various regions, the 2026 forecast offers travelers the flexibility to plan an early-season getaway to Okinawa, a classic spring visit in April, or a late bloom adventure in Hokkaido.
