Ahmedabad Airport Restarts Restricted Services Following Air India Flight Accident Ahmedabad Airport Restarts Restricted Services Following Air India Flight Accident
Ahmedabad airport has resumed limited flight operations on Thursday after a temporary suspension due to the crash of an Air India flight bound for the UK. Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport, which was previously closed following the incident involving the London Gatwick-bound Air India Boeing 787-8, is now operational on a restricted basis, as stated by the airport’s private operator.

“Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport, Ahmedabad, is currently operational with limited flights,” said an airport spokesperson.

All flight operations had been temporarily halted, the SVPIA spokesperson confirmed.
The aircraft — a Boeing 787 Dreamliner operating as Flight AI171 — crashed shortly after takeoff in a nearby locality. The flight was headed to London Gatwick. Emergency response teams have been deployed, and an investigation is now underway.

Air India has confirmed that flight AI171, which took off from Ahmedabad to London Gatwick on 12 June 2025, was involved in a tragic accident shortly after its departure.

The Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, in service for 12 years, left Ahmedabad at 1:38 PM, carrying 230 passengers and 12 crew members.

The airline regrettably announced that there were 241 fatalities among the 242 individuals on board. The only survivor, a British national of Indian descent, is currently receiving medical attention at a nearby hospital.

The tragedy has reopened painful memories of the 1988 aviation disaster near Ahmedabad that claimed 133 lives. In that incident, only two passengers survived, including Ashok Agarwal, a local textile businessman who passed away in 2020. He lost his wife and 11-month-old daughter in that crash.

Meanwhile, IndiGo issued a travel advisory on X, indicating that operations at Ahmedabad airport will be affected due to restrictions following the Air India flight crash.

Authorities are advising the public to avoid the crash site to aid rescue and recovery efforts. More information will be released as it becomes available.
