The joy ride is set for 14 November and will depart from Siliguri to Rongtong, providing these children the opportunity to enjoy the breathtaking landscapes of the hills aboard one of India’s iconic narrow-gauge trains. “This initiative seeks to open up the joy of rail travel and the beauty of the hills to every child,” the official remarked.
This event is being organized in partnership with a local NGO dedicated to assisting differently-abled children. The official expressed hope that the ride will create cherished memories and foster inclusivity through shared cultural experiences.
In addition, the second to last phase of the ‘Shatabdi March’, marking the centenary of Mahatma Gandhi’s visit to Darjeeling, is scheduled for Saturday, from Rongtong to Sukna station. Following the march, children from Rongtong will also enjoy a heritage train experience, “reflecting the spirit of unity and celebration that defines DHR’s heritage,” the official noted.
Additionally, DHR will host the final round of the Iron Sherpa competition on Thursday. This contest identifies the best all-around student from the railway’s catchment area, reinforcing DHR’s dedication to community involvement and youth development.
