The air quality in Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR) remained in the “very poor” category on Monday, December 22. The region is blanketed by toxic smog, leading to anticipated disruptions in both flight and train travel.

As of 8:05 am, Delhi’s Air Quality Index (AQI) was recorded at 366, according to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB)’s Sameer mobile application. One of the 40 pollution monitoring stations in Delhi was reported to be malfunctioning on December 22.

The Anand Vihar station reported an AQI of 404, while Bawana recorded 408. Other stations such as Jahangirpuri (403), Mundka (401), Narela (418), Rohini (402), and Wazirpur (405) also registered AQI levels in the severe category.

A thick layer of toxic smog was observed covering various areas of the city, with significantly reduced visibility in ITO, Sarai Kale Khan, Anand Vihar, Ghazipur, and India Gate among others.

According to news agency PTI, the dense fog has caused disruptions in train operations throughout the city, with multiple trains being rescheduled at the New Delhi Railway Station.

Conversely, Delhi Airport reported that flight operations continued smoothly despite the adverse fog conditions in the region.

In a statement on X (formerly known as Twitter), Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL) noted, “Low visibility procedures are being implemented at Delhi Airport. All flight operations are proceeding as usual.”

Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning indicating that the thick haze is expected to persist over the next two days in North India.
