In a formal notice issued on Friday (June 20), the aviation authority pinpointed the three as being directly accountable for numerous violations, including unauthorized and non-compliant crew pairings, infractions of essential licensing requirements, and a lack of compliance with flight crew recency standards. The DGCA termed the situation a “systemic failure” in both scheduling processes and supervisory oversight. The safety of passengers could be at risk if pilots or cabin crew are not appropriately rested or trained.
“These three individuals have committed serious and repeated errors regarding crew rostering,” the DGCA remarked, requiring that internal disciplinary actions be initiated against them within 10 days.
The regulator issued a cautionary note to the Tata Group-owned airline, warning that any future infractions regarding crew scheduling could result in harsh penalties, including the suspension of operating licenses and further limitations on flight operations.

In a further action, the DGCA served a show cause notice to Air India for violating flight time limitations stated in the Civil Aviation Requirements (CAR Section 7, Series J, Part III). Recent spot checks revealed that two Bengaluru–London flights — AI133 on May 16 and 17 — exceeded the permitted 10-hour duty limit for flight crew.
These flight time regulations are crucial to prevent pilot and crew fatigue on long-haul journeys. Fatigue poses a significant threat to flight safety.
The DGCA pointed out that Air India failed to comply with the mandated flight time norms and has requested the airline to reply within seven days, detailing why regulatory action should not be initiated against them.
“Failure to respond may lead to an ex parte decision based solely on the evidence available,” the notice cautioned.
Air India acknowledged receiving the regulator’s directive and stated that the carrier has acted upon the order. “In the interim, the company’s Chief Operations Officer will assume direct oversight of the Integrated Operations Control Centre (IOCC). Air India is dedicated to ensuring full adherence to safety protocols and standard practices,” the airline added.
These developments arise as Air India faces heightened scrutiny due to recent operational disruptions and the tragic plane crash on June 12 in Ahmedabad. The regulator’s actions underscore increasing concerns regarding the airline’s internal management and compliance with aviation safety regulations.
Industry experts perceive the DGCA’s actions as a vital step in reinforcing discipline in crew management, which is essential for flight safety. The nature of Air India’s response to the notice will likely influence the extent of any further regulatory actions.
