Residents of Mumbai will soon have a quicker way to navigate the city’s traffic, taking an electric water taxi from the Gateway of India to Navi Mumbai International Airport in just 40 minutes.
The water taxi initiative is part of an effort to promote sustainable urban transport, with the goal of alleviating road congestion while providing a cleaner and more efficient travel alternative between Mumbai and Navi Mumbai.
On May 3, Ports and Fisheries Minister Nitesh Rane convened a review meeting, urging the Maharashtra Ports Department to accelerate preparations for launching the service.
Officials were instructed to prepare proposals and outline detailed plans for constructing jetties as needed. The minister also called for a phased approach to terminal development and for the airport authority to start working on the necessary permissions.

Senior officials present at the meeting included Sanjay Sethi, Additional Chief Secretary of the Transport and Ports Department, Brijesh Singhal from the Navi Mumbai Airport Authority, and Pradeep Badiye from the Maharashtra Maritime Board.
Once operational, this water taxi route will improve connectivity between Mumbai and prominent locations in Navi Mumbai, including the new international airport. This initiative aligns with the state’s strategy to modernize transport systems while prioritizing environmental sustainability.
This project represents a significant advancement by the state government to enhance water-based transport infrastructure in and around Mumbai. With road congestion on the rise, such sustainable alternatives may provide commuters with a more convenient and quicker mode of transportation.
The water taxi service aims to alleviate the burden for thousands of daily commuters and is also expected to boost tourism by presenting a scenic and swift travel option. With planning and execution moving forward rapidly, Mumbai could soon experience a transformative change in how residents traverse the city and its expanding suburbs.
