The move brings Nécessaire into the surprisingly crowded status-soap space, alongside longtime favorites like Aesop Resurrection Hand Wash ($47) and Le Labo Hinoki Hand Soap ($54), both known for turning everyday essentials into chic, giftable fixtures of the modern bathroom.
Nécessaire’s take feels distinctly its own: architectural packaging, the brand’s warm Santal scent of pure sandalwood oil, black pepper, iris and suede, and ingredients chosen with skin health in mind. Both The Hand Wash and The Hand Lotion use niacinamide, panthenol and glycerin, a trio that helps replenish hydration, soften roughness and defend against the moisture loss that can come with frequent washing.
While The Hand Wash is new territory for Nécessaire, hand care itself isn’t. In late 2023, the brand introduced The Hand Cream ($28)—which has earned the National Eczema Association Seal of Acceptance—and The Hand Retinol ($38) as a two-step system: a barrier-supporting cream for day and a nighttime retinol treatment for hands.
