The Andaman and Nicobar Islands are poised for a significant transformation as part of a comprehensive strategy aimed at positioning the archipelago as a top-tier global tourism destination.

Chief Secretary Chandra Bhushan Kumar has stated that a thorough development blueprint has been crafted, focusing on modern infrastructure development, cultural heritage promotion, eco-tourism encouragement, and sustainable growth initiatives.

In a statement to PTI, Kumar emphasized the islands’ unique allure and strategic importance. “The Andaman and Nicobar archipelago, consisting of 836 islands, provides a rare combination of natural splendor, historical richness, and adventure tourism. Our goal is to uplift it to worldwide tourism standards,” he remarked.

An essential aspect of this initiative is the enhancement of high-end hospitality infrastructure. Following the directives of the Union Ministry of Home Affairs, plans are in place for the construction of four five-star resorts on selected islands, aimed at boosting luxury tourism.

There are also ongoing plans for a dedicated yacht marina, with an Expression of Interest (EoI) issued to draw potential developers. “The marina will play a critical role in attracting cruise tourism and private yachts, thereby elevating the islands’ status as a luxury destination,” Kumar explained.

Heritage preservation and promotion constitute another cornerstone of the government’s tourism initiative. Kumar announced efforts to obtain UNESCO World Heritage Site status for the iconic Cellular Jail, which is already on the tentative list.

“We wish for visitors to truly engage with the legacy of India’s freedom struggle,” he added.

To facilitate this, a new tourism circuit linking the Cellular Jail, Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose Island, and Viper Island is being developed. This circuit will include light and sound shows, curated tours, and immersive experiences aimed at educating visitors about the islands’ historical importance.

In a move to tap into the potential of the islands’ extensive coastal stretch—accounting for more than 25 percent of India’s coastline—the administration is expanding water-based adventure activities such as scuba diving, snorkeling, and game fishing, all under stringent safety regulations and professional oversight.

Moreover, the region’s clear, unpolluted skies are being utilized for astro-tourism, offering stargazing opportunities that are rarely found in urban India.

“Tourism is no longer limited to Swaraj Dweep and Shaheed Dweep. New attractions like Baratang Island, famous for its mud volcanoes and limestone caves, are becoming increasingly popular,” Kumar noted.

In line with this tourism expansion, there is a strong emphasis on human resource development. Training programs are being launched for local youth in tourism, hospitality, fisheries, and related support sectors, aimed at promoting inclusive employment growth.

Tourism statistics from the Islands’ Department of Tourism indicate a sharp increase in visitor numbers in recent years. In 2022, the territory welcomed 2,35,061 domestic and 4,461 international visitors. By 2023, these figures rose to 3,23,619 domestic and 9,025 international travelers. The growth trend continued into 2024, with 7,10,397 Indian tourists and 11,497 foreign arrivals.

Industry insiders project a further 25 percent rise in tourist numbers by 2025, attributing this growth to improved infrastructure and targeted promotional efforts.

As the Islands strive for a future rich in environmentally responsible and culturally vibrant tourism, officials remain hopeful about their potential to become a premier destination on the global travel landscape.
