The development of roadways and other travel-related infrastructure across the country over the past 11 years has significantly enhanced spiritual tourism, Union minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat stated on Friday.

During a press conference at his residence, he presented data illustrating the increase in the length of four-lane roads and other highways in the last decade. The Union minister, overseeing the culture and tourism portfolios, noted that prior to 2014, the total length of four-lane expressways in the country was “just over 18,000 km.”

“Today, it is with pride that we say it has increased 2.5 times, now reaching nearly 48,200 km,” he remarked, adding that high-speed corridors have expanded their network by 8.5 times during this timeframe.
Shekhawat emphasized that the enhancement in road infrastructure and related travel facilities has provided a “big boost” to spiritual tourism. He highlighted the development of roads leading to prominent pilgrimage destinations, shrines, and other religious sites throughout the country.

He also spoke about the Char Dham Yatra, Panchkosi Yatra, and how improved road infrastructure is enabling more individuals to embark on these journeys. In Gujarat’s Bet Dwarka, the Sudarshan Setu, he noted, has improved connectivity.

Additionally, he mentioned that the Northeast region has reaped benefits from advancements in road and infrastructure, making its tourist locations more accessible and visible.
