This digitally savvy generation is embarking on longer, purpose-driven journeys that frequently blend work, leisure, and significant personal events like weddings.
Notably, they are also financially prudent. Nearly all of ACKO’s clients—99.48%—selected medical travel insurance, and 83% opted for comprehensive plans that cover issues like baggage loss, delays, and trip interruptions.
“Travel today transcends mere leisure—it embodies freedom and connectivity. Yet, every journey carries a degree of uncertainty,” stated an ACKO spokesperson, emphasizing the importance of planning and securing insurance.
The report is based on 49,000 travel insurance policies
accounting for over 100,000 travelers, illustrating the monetary effects of common travel incidents:
- Medical claims represent 33% of payouts, averaging ₹16,542 per claim.
- Delayed baggage comprised 25% of claims, with average payouts of ₹17,379.
- Trip rescheduling—caused by missed connections or cancellations—led to the largest average payouts of ₹72,428.
Travel claims were most prevalent in the UK, USA, and Schengen countries.
The report also underscores a notable increase in female participation. Women now make up 43% of international Indian travelers, narrowing a historic gender gap. Many are traveling solo, in groups, or leading family trips, showcasing increased independence and confidence in exploring global destinations.
Top international hotspots for 2024 included Thailand (13%), UAE (10%), USA (6%), Vietnam (5%), and Indonesia (5%). Factors such as visa accessibility, affordable airfare, and social media influence played key roles in shaping these selections.
Two primary types of travelers have emerged:
- Beach enthusiasts heading to Phuket, Bali, and Da Nang
- Urban explorers visiting Dubai, New York, and San Francisco
With outbound travel expected to surpass $55 billion by 2034, and spending in FY24 already surging by 25% to $31.7 billion, the economic impact of Indian travelers is rapidly growing.
