Visitors should sample Mate (pronounced MAH-tay), a bitter, caffeinated green tea derived from the yerba mate plant, indigenous to southern Latin America. As shown in the previous image taken at Paseo de los Pescadores (Fisherman’s Walk) along the coastal promenade Presidente Wilson, people fill a gourd with dried leaves and hot water, sipping through a bombilla, which is a metal straw with a filter. Lucinda Elliot reported for Reuters that this drink holds such significance for Uruguayans, including prominent soccer players, that many carry thermoses to refill their gourds at any time.
