Mumbai has rapidly become a culinary hotspot. People here eagerly anticipate pop-ups, which have quickly established themselves as a fresh cultural phenomenon. Among these, the one I attended on Friday night was notably exceptional. It’s not every day you have the chance to interact with and sample Michelin star gourmet cuisine.

During the weekend, Chef Patrizia Di Benedetto, the first Sicilian woman to receive a Michelin star, presented a six-course set menu with an optional wine pairing at Celini, Grand Hyatt Mumbai. Chef Benedetto’s cuisine is calm, intentional, and subtly expressive, proving that exceptional cooking doesn’t require volume; it requires focus.

Chef Benedetto remarks, “In Sicily, every woman is a good chef. We learned from our grandmothers and mothers, who prepared meals for family and friends. I’m thrilled to share the flavors of Sicily with Mumbai and hope the city embraces it as we have throughout our lives.” The set menu is offered at ₹4,995 plus taxes, with an additional ₹2,000 plus taxes for the wine pairing. The special Wine Dinner on November 21 was priced at ₹5,995 plus taxes per person, but the experience continues today and tomorrow — November 22 and 23 — featuring both the set menu and a broad à la carte selection for lunch (12:30 pm to 3 pm) and dinner (7:30 pm to midnight).

If you’re planning a visit, these two days present a unique opportunity to experience Patrizia’s limited residency at Celini. Upon arriving at Celini on Friday evening, the first course evoked an unmistakable sense of quiet confidence. Patrizia, who has spent over three decades crafting contemporary Mediterranean cuisine, did not offer a postcard depiction of Sicily. Instead, she provided a distilled interpretation: refined, edited, and deeply personal.

The courses unfolded with a rhythm: vibrant citrus notes, balanced acidity, warm olive-oil richness, and a gentle assertiveness in flavor that never overstepped into excess. The wine pairings enhanced the experience without being overpowering. Then came the dish that, for me, encapsulated the evening — the pistachio-crusted lamb. Perfectly cooked, aromatic, and adorned with a delicate nuttiness, it was the type of dish that instinctively urged you to slow down. It didn’t seek to dominate the meal; rather, it simply occupied its place as the centerpiece. If anything was a showstopper on the table, this was it.

Just when I thought the evening had peaked with the pistachio-crusted lamb, the dessert course reminded me that Sicilian cuisine always leaves room for a final touch. The menu provided two options, each deeply rooted in the island’s traditions. One was a ricotta gelato adorned with candied capers and a bright, sticky Malvasia orange marmalade that tasted as if Sicilian sunshine was captured in a spoon. The other was a pistachio parfait accompanied by warm chocolate sauce, a richer, more indulgent conclusion that wrapped up the evening’s flavors with warmth and softness. I opted for the gelato, which was a dessert that didn’t overwhelm the palate; it simply concluded the meal the way a good story finishes — quietly, elegantly, and with a hint of surprise.

By the end of the night, it became evident why Mumbai is welcoming this new trend of pop-ups. When executed with intention, restraint, and a chef who clearly articulates her culinary narrative, a pop-up transcends being just a meal; it transforms into a memorable experience.
