The Southern Railway has successfully electrified 97.63 percent of its network, aiming for complete electrification by 2030. As reported by Southern Railway (SR), out of a total network of 5,116 km, 4,995 km has already been electrified.

In conjunction with Energy Conservation Day on December 14, SR noted that the week from December 8 to 14 is recognized as Energy Conservation Week, featuring extensive outreach activities across six divisions and workshops to emphasize the importance of energy conservation in the region.

In line with the goal of achieving 100 percent electrification, a recent official statement emphasized, “Dedicated to fulfilling the Mission 100 percent electrification by 2030, Southern Railway has achieved 97.63 percent of its extensive network, with 4,995 km out of 5,116 km now under electrified traction.” Regarding renewable energy initiatives, Southern Railway reported a total solar generation of 35.81 million units, resulting in savings of Rs 18.94 crore.
Additionally, five new buildings have been submitted to the Bureau of Energy Efficiency for the ‘Shunya’ certification. This certification represents energy-efficiency ratings established by the BEE under the Ministry of Power, indicating that the building largely attains net-zero energy consumption from external sources through effective design, equipment, and renewable energy utilization.

Throughout its facilities, Southern Railway has fully converted to LED lighting, having installed 34,488 BLDC fans in offices, railway stations, and quarters, replacing traditional fans.

Timers have been installed for station and yard lights, with energy savers incorporated into welding plants, the report stated.

Automated sensors for lighting and air conditioning control in office chambers and meeting rooms have been set up to reduce power consumption. Through energy upgrades to more efficient systems, Southern Railway continues to implement sustainable energy initiatives for the benefit of rail users and the public, it added.
