The unwritten rule that women over 50 should go short? Stylists are officially done with it. “It’s the biggest misconception,” says Phoenix Donna Bella Hair Pro Ambassador Antonio Estrada. “Youthfulness doesn’t come from length. It comes from movement, softness and density.”
Other stylists echo the sentiment: “I am a firm believer that age is what you make it and [you shouldn’t] let a number hold you back,” says celebrity hairstylist Samantha Bentson. “I hear far too often, ‘I’m too old for that’ or ‘if only I was younger.’”
This summer, hairstylists say the biggest haircut trends for women over 50 are less about age and more about movement, softness and healthy, full hair. “Fuller hair tends to read as more youthful, which is why adding volume with hair extensions (my favorite are from Donna Bella) can often make a bigger impact than changing the cut itself,” says Estrada.
The haircuts trending for mature women include bobs (chin-length short cuts that have been incredibly popular across all age groups), lobs (longer versions of bobs, which usually hit the shoulders or collarbones), long layers and more. But consider your lifestyle and face shape too—age isn’t the only factor, nor is it the most important. “It’s more about identifying your face shape and understanding the features of your bone structure and highlighting what you want to accentuate, or features you’d like to take away,” says Rodger Azadganian, the founder of äz Craft Luxury Haircare. “The cut and style also has to suit the individual’s lifestyle.”
