Union Tourism Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat has shared his enthusiasm after a “positive and forward-looking” meeting with Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah about revitalizing the region’s tourism sector. This discussion took place during Shekhawat’s two-day trip to the Union Territory, which commenced on Wednesday.

On social media platform X, Shekhawat stated, “During my visit to Jammu & Kashmir, I was kindly invited for a dinner interaction by Hon’ble Chief Minister Shri Omar Abdullah Ji. In a welcoming and cordial setting, we engaged in a constructive conversation about the growth of the tourism sector in J&K. We focused on improving infrastructure, promoting heritage sites, and creating sustainable job opportunities for local communities through tourism.”

He further noted that such interactions underscore “our shared commitment” to elevate Jammu and Kashmir into a premier tourism destination that highlights its cultural heritage, natural splendor, and the essence of its people.

The discussions arise at a critical juncture for the region’s tourism industry, which is struggling in the wake of the 22 April terror attack in Pahalgam that took 26 lives. This tragic event has cast a pall over the Union Territory’s travel sector, prompting authorities to reinforce both security measures and promotional initiatives.

Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has recently ramped up outreach efforts throughout various areas of Kashmir, conducting meetings and public interactions aimed at reassuring visitors and stakeholders about safety and infrastructure advancements.

During his trip, Minister Shekhawat visited the sacred shrine of Mata Kheer Bhawani and is scheduled to explore the historic Martand Sun Temple and key tourist sites, including Pahalgam and Betaab Valley in Anantnag district.
