Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on Thursday that VFS Global has tentatively agreed to establish a specialized visa facilitation centre in Guwahati. This centre will handle visa applications for over 60 countries, alleviating the necessity for Assam and other northeastern residents to travel to Delhi or Mumbai for biometric submissions.

The Chief Minister mentioned on X that additional information, including the list of participating countries and anticipated timelines, will be released shortly. He remarked: “Are you planning to travel abroad? Need to submit biometrics for your visa application? That used to require a long trip to either Delhi or Mumbai. Soon, this will be a thing of the past for the people of Assam and the North East. Delighted to announce that VFS Global

has in principle agreed to set up a dedicated visa facilitation centre for over 60 countries in Guwahati.”

We will soon provide more details—such as the countries for which visa applications can be made in Guwahati, opening timelines, etc. Stay tuned.

On the same day, Sarma presented appointment letters to 377 TET and TET-cum-Recruitment qualified individuals from the Tea Tribe and Adivasi communities at Srimanta Sankaradev Kalakshetra, Guwahati. This brings the total number of government recruitments in Assam since 2021 to 135,376, achieved through a transparent, merit-based process.

Sarma also provided funds to educational institutions aimed at waiving fees for students from Below Poverty Line (BPL) households enrolled in Higher Secondary and four-year undergraduate courses for the academic year 2025–26.
