The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast scattered rainfall in parts of the southern and eastern regions, ongoing cold temperatures across much of the country, and widespread dense fog affecting the northern and central plains.

The latest bulletin from the IMD indicates dense fog in isolated areas of Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh during the early mornings of December 16 and 17. Similar conditions are anticipated in the northern states, including Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, and Himachal Pradesh.

Delhi-NCR
On Tuesday morning, the national capital region, comprising Delhi and nearby areas, was shrouded in dense fog, complicating traffic and diminishing visibility.

At Indira Gandhi International Airport, over 60 flights were cancelled, and more than 250 experienced delays due to the poor visibility, while similar disruptions were reported in Chandigarh and other northern cities.

The combination of fog and poor air quality has been exacerbated by cold air and stagnant conditions. Delhi is expected to witness moderate to severe fog in the morning, with low temperatures ranging from 9 to 11°C and highs between 22 and 24°C.

Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan

Thick fog is set to persist until the early morning hours across Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan, complicating road travel and daily routines for commuters. Additionally, areas like Dehradun, Nainital, Chamoli, and Shimla will experience dense fog.

Patna, Bhagalpur, and Darbhanga are currently under a dense fog alert. Several regions in Uttar Pradesh, including Kanpur, Lucknow, Ayodhya, Agra, and Varanasi, will face reduced visibility due to the fog, according to the IMD.

A dense fog alert has also been issued for Alwar, Sriganganagar, Jaipur, and Jaisalmer in Rajasthan.

Southern states

Weather conditions in the southern states remain unpredictable. While isolated light to moderate rainfall is possible, meteorological forecasts indicate predominantly dry conditions across most areas, especially in Tamil Nadu and neighboring districts.

Although widespread rainfall is not forecast, coastal regions of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Kerala, and Southern Interior Karnataka may see occasional showers as a weak easterly influence lingers.

Central and Eastern India

The weather in West Bengal, including Kolkata, is expected to remain mainly dry and warm, with pleasant afternoon temperatures and hazy mornings. Meteorological data suggests there will be no significant rainfall in the area on December 16.

While light to moderate fog may develop in the mornings across Bihar and Jharkhand, the majority of Central and Eastern India is predicted to stay dry. Visibility issues related to fog and cold mornings are anticipated to continue throughout the week in the Indo-Gangetic plains.
