Rank Movement: The latest Henley Passport Index for 2026 shows a significant improvement for India, which has ascended five ranks to 80th position. This advancement provides Indian passport holders with slightly enhanced travel opportunities compared to last year, yet much work remains for India to catch up to the highest-ranked global passports regarding visa-free access.
Access Count: As reported by Henley & Partners, an advisory firm on global citizenship, Indian passport holders can now enter 55 countries and territories without a visa, or by obtaining a visa-on-arrival or electronic travel authorisation. In comparison, India was ranked 85th in 2025 and 80th in 2024, illustrating a pattern of steady but inconsistent shifts in its global mobility status.
Index Method: The 2026 Henley Passport Index is derived from comprehensive data provided by the International Air Transport Association, covering 227 global destinations. It assesses 199 passports based on how many locations can be accessed without a pre-obtained visa, serving as a benchmark for travel freedom connected to diplomatic relations and economic standing. Asian Access: Indian passport holders can enjoy visa-free entry or facilitated access to several Asian countries, such as Bhutan, Nepal, Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, Maldives, Iran, Hong Kong SAR, and Macao SAR. Entry to Sri Lanka is granted through an electronic travel authorisation, making these locations key options for Indian travelers in the Asian continent. (Image: Shutterstock)
African Routes: In Africa, Indian travelers can access nations such as Kenya, Tanzania, Zimbabwe, Senegal, Mauritius, Seychelles, Mozambique, and Rwanda without a visa or with simplified entry procedures. These access points contribute to India’s overall count of accessible destinations, although visa conditions may vary and be subject to change based on the policies of each country.
Middle East: In the Middle East, Qatar offers visa-on-arrival facilities for Indian passport holders. Nevertheless, the overall options for visa-free or simplified entry for Indians in this region remain limited compared to those available in Asia or other island nations, highlighting a disparity in travel access as indicated by the 2026 index.
Island Nations: Various Caribbean and Pacific islands permit entry to Indian citizens with minimal visa restrictions. In the Caribbean, accessible locations include Barbados, Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago, Grenada, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Dominica, Haiti, and Montserrat. Pacific destinations feature Fiji, Micronesia, Vanuatu, Palau, and Samoa, expanding travel opportunities for Indian passport holders.
Americas List: Indian passport holders can visit Bolivia and El Salvador under simplified visa conditions. Across all the mentioned destinations, Henley & Partners emphasized that the visa regulations may vary, including distinguishing between visa-free access, visa-on-arrival, and electronic permissions, with potential adjustments based on bilateral agreements.
Top Rankings: The 2026 index highlights a dominance of Asian passports, with Singapore at the forefront for the third consecutive year, granting unrestricted access to 192 locations. Japan and South Korea share the second spot, each allowing access to 188 destinations. Denmark, Switzerland, Sweden, Spain, and Luxembourg are jointly in third place, offering access to 186 places.
