Vande Bharat Sleeper Launched: Highlights, Route Details, Schedule, and More Vande Bharat Sleeper Launched: Highlights, Route Details, Schedule, and More

On Saturday, January 17, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated India’s first sleeper Vande Bharat train, linking Howrah and Kamakhya, during his two-day trip to West Bengal. The ceremony took place in Malda.

In contrast to the current Vande Bharat trains that function as chair-car services, this new version is specifically engineered for overnight journeys. The train will operate six days a week in both directions, departing Howrah at 6:20 PM and Kamakhya at 6:15 PM, with an estimated travel time of approximately 14 hours.

This service aims to enhance the comfort and efficiency of long-distance travel between eastern India and the Northeast.

What distinguishes this sleeper Vande Bharat

Designed for overnight trips, the new Vande Bharat features sleeper coaches rather than just seating arrangements. The train’s interiors were displayed prior to the launch, showcasing its contemporary design.

According to the Railways, there will be no RAC or waitlist options available, allowing only confirmed ticket holders to board. Ticket prices range from ₹960 to ₹13,300, depending on the class selected.

Union Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw mentioned that local delicacies from Bengal and Assam would be available on the train.

Expected benefits for travelers

This new service is anticipated to assist passengers frequently traveling between West Bengal and Assam by providing a direct overnight option. By minimizing travel time and operating during the night, the train enables travelers to reclaim valuable daytime hours.

At the event, Prime Minister Modi remarked that the train connects “the land of Ma Kali with the land of Ma Kamakhya,” and expressed that the new service would facilitate travel and trade.

He noted that foreign nationals are documenting their experiences with Indian trains and sharing how the rail system has evolved. Modi added that Vande Bharat trains are manufactured in India, signifying that Indian Railways is progressing toward modernization and self-sufficiency.

Additional trains launched in West Bengal

In addition to the sleeper Vande Bharat, four other trains were launched virtually:

  • New Jalpaiguri–Nagercoil Amrit Bharat Express
  • New Jalpaiguri–Tiruchirappalli Amrit Bharat Express
  • Alipurduar–SMVT Bengaluru Amrit Bharat Express
  • Alipurduar–Mumbai (Panvel) Amrit Bharat Express

These Amrit Bharat Express trains will connect West Bengal to various regions across the country, including the south and west.

The launches occur as West Bengal approaches its election period.

Senior BJP officials, including Sukanta Majumdar, Suvendu Adhikari, and Samik Bhattacharya, were present at the event, alongside Governor C.V. Ananda Bose.
