Almost 200 tourists found themselves stranded at Chungthang in North Sikkim following multiple landslides caused by heavy rainfall, which disrupted road access, officials reported on Wednesday morning.

Mangan District Collector Anant Jain indicated that the landslides took place along the vital Chungthang-Lachen route on Tuesday night, leaving travelers headed for Lachen trapped midway.

Those stranded were provided shelter for the night at an ITBP camp and a gurudwara in Chungthang, he added.
The Border Roads Organisation (BRO) is currently engaged in restoration efforts, with officials noting that authorities will assess the situation and may permit travel only once routes are deemed safe, influenced by weather conditions.
Some tourists have since made their way back to Gangtok and have cancelled their travel arrangements, they reported.

In the meantime, the road to Lachung, which was also obstructed on Tuesday night, has been cleared, and tourists from that area were safely sent back to Gangtok on Wednesday morning.

Officials stated that the situation is being closely monitored as sporadic rainfall continues in the region.

The Lachen route had only just reopened on March 9 after suffering extensive damage from the 2023 glacial lake outburst flood (GLOF).

Moreover, popular tourist spots like Tsomgo Lake and Nathula remain closed due to significant snowfall in recent days.
