On Friday, UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) announced that starting from 25 February 2026, the majority of individuals applying for a UK visa will utilize this new system.
This digital initiative is part of the UK government’s strategy to modernize border and immigration procedures, simplifying international travel for visa holders.
The eVisa will replace the traditional visa vignette stickers in passports and other physical immigration documents. Applicants will no longer be required to surrender their passports during the decision-making time, enabling them to apply for visas to other countries simultaneously.
Most applicants will need to attend a single appointment at a Visa Application Centre to confirm their identity, submit any necessary documents, and provide biometrics, after which they can leave with their passport.
“Over 10 million people are already using secure and convenient eVisas, which are taking the place of physical immigration documents like biometric residence permits (BRPs) and passport visa vignettes. We are now nearing the completion of this implementation, with eVisas becoming the standard proof of status for most immigration pathways to the UK,” stated UK Visas and Immigration.
Here’s how the eVisa application process works:
- Begin your visa application online at the official gov.uk website and complete the form.
- Schedule an appointment with VFS Global after submitting the form.
- Visit the Visa Application Centre to verify your identity, submit any required documents, and provide biometrics.
- Leave the center with your passport; you do not need to hand it in while awaiting the outcome.
- Wait for the visa decision while retaining your passport.
- If granted, you will receive an email with instructions on how to access your eVisa online.
- Create or log in to your UKVI account to view your eVisa.
- Ensure that all information on the eVisa is accurate prior to your travel to the UK.
Srinarayan Sankaran, Chief Operating Officer – Global Operations at VFS Global, remarked that the change benefits travelers. “The transition to eVisas will significantly streamline the experience for travelers, providing them with the convenience and flexibility to keep their passports, allowing for applications to other countries in the meantime.”
Digital immigration transition and regulations for travelers
The UK has made eVisas mandatory for Indian travelers as part of a broader effort towards a fully digital immigration framework. Airlines may deny boarding to those who lack an eVisa, Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA), or other valid travel permissions.
Immigration status is electronically stored through the UKVI system, though applicants must still visit a Visa Application Centre for identity verification and biometrics.
Visitors from 85 visa-exempt nations, including the United States, Canada, and France, are required to obtain an ETA before traveling to the UK. The authorization permits multiple entries and is valid for two years or until the passport expires, whichever comes first.
This is also necessary for transit passengers who go through passport control. British and Irish citizens, including dual nationals, are exempt but must present valid documentation.
UKVI has advised applicants to set up a UKVI account, access their eVisa, and ensure that all details are accurate prior to travel to prevent any disruptions.
