Monsoon Travel: Essential Tips for Purchasing Travel Insurance

Monsoon Travel: Essential Tips for Purchasing Travel Insurance Monsoon Travel: Essential Tips for Purchasing Travel Insurance
With the onset of the monsoon season, travel plans often increase, ranging from quick domestic trips to excursions at hill stations and nature spots. Although rainfall can be a non-disruptive factor for flights and travel schedules, there are instances where weather conditions might cause delays, road closures, medical emergencies, or alterations to plans.

Travel insurance can assist travelers in mitigating the financial consequences of such situations, depending on the chosen coverage. Nonetheless, experts emphasize the necessity of grasping policy features and exclusions prior to purchasing any plan.

“During the monsoon season, travel insurance becomes especially pertinent, as weather-related disruptions might sporadically affect travel schedules. Most thorough travel insurance policies offer coverage for trip delays, missed connections, cancellations, and additional costs incurred from covered interruptions, under the terms and conditions of the policy,” stated Rakesh Kaul, Chief Distribution Officer – Retail Business, Bajaj General Insurance, a private general insurance firm.
What does a travel insurance policy cover?

A travel insurance policy may offer coverage against trip delays, cancellations, missed connections, baggage-related issues, and emergency medical expenses throughout the journey. The level of protection varies based on the policy terms, the cause of the disruption, and the documentation submitted during a claim.

For instance, if adverse weather conditions cause a flight delay, some policies may reimburse eligible expenses like meals, accommodation, or transportation after meeting certain conditions.

Likewise, trip cancellation benefits might cover specific prepaid and non-refundable costs if the cancellation reason falls within the policy’s coverage.

“Depending on the coverage and nature of the journey, travel insurance may encompass benefits like trip delay, trip cancellation, missed flight connections, loss or delay of checked baggage, and emergency medical expenses while traveling,” indicated Birendra Mohanty, Chief Business Officer, Zurich Kotak General Insurance, a collaboration between Zurich Insurance Group and India’s Kotak Mahindra Bank.

Why domestic travellers should also consider travel insurance

Often linked to international travel, travel insurance can also significantly aid domestic travelers in handling unexpected expenses during their trips. Medical emergencies, cancellations, baggage issues, or travel delays can lead to additional costs, even within India.

“Domestic travelers can benefit from coverage, particularly when faced with trip delays, cancellations, medical emergencies, or baggage-related problems,” Kaul added.

He emphasized that travelers should choose policies based on their destination, travel duration, and planned activities, instead of opting for a generic cover without assessing their individual needs.

Features to consider during monsoon travel

For travelers venturing into regions susceptible to heavy rainfall, landslides, or challenging road conditions, policies that encompass trip cancellation, trip interruption, emergency assistance, and medical evacuation benefits may be advisable.

Travelers going to destinations prone to significant rainfall or weather-related disturbances should seek policies that provide comprehensive cancellation, interruption, and delay benefits.

For those headed to remote areas, emergency assistance services can be invaluable for organizing alternative travel options, accommodation support, or medical aid.

“Emergency Accidental Treatment and Evacuation covers medical treatment for accidents, incorporating emergency medical evacuation to an appropriate medical facility, which is vital in affected regions,” explained Vivek Chaturvedi, CMO & Head of Direct Sales, Digit General Insurance, a digital-first non-life insurance provider in India.

Check exclusions before buying

Travel insurance policies impose specific conditions, and not every disruption meets the criteria for a claim. Travelers should thoroughly evaluate waiting periods, coverage limits, exclusions, and documentation requirements before purchasing a policy.

“Coverage can vary among insurers and between domestic and international travel policies. It is important for travelers to carefully review policy details before completing a purchase,” Mohanty advised.

For example, claims may necessitate documents like airline delay certificates, baggage irregularity reports, or original bills. Additionally, policies might stipulate minimum delay periods before benefits become payable.

Chaturvedi suggested that travelers should verify conditions related to delay notifications, missed connections, and pre-existing circumstances, as these factors could influence claim eligibility.
