Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu launched the service on Friday, June 25, as stated in an official announcement.
With the Hub-and-Spoke model, international passengers can carry out check-in, immigration, and customs procedures at their departure airport before taking a domestic flight to a hub, such as Delhi, before continuing their international journey.
The government indicated that this initiative is part of their vision to establish India as the preferred aviation hub for Indian travelers by 2030 and a global aviation center by 2047.
During the launch, Naidu mentioned that the new model would enhance accessibility for international travel while reinforcing India’s aviation infrastructure. “Our innovative hub-and-spoke model facilitates a significant transformation in how our citizens travel—no matter where you live in India, you can commence your international journey from your hometown and travel worldwide effortlessly and confidently, using India’s own services,” he stated.
The PIB reported that enhanced international connectivity through the Hub-and-Spoke model is anticipated to stimulate trade, tourism, investment, and regional economic growth.
Studies from the Ministry suggest this initiative could create approximately 0.4 million direct and indirect jobs and contribute an additional $30 billion to India’s GDP by 2030. By 2047, the total economic benefit may support around 16 million jobs and add roughly $1.4 trillion to the economy.
According to the government, both domestic and international segments under this model will be classified as international operations to maintain security and operational effectiveness. Separate boarding passes will be provided for domestic and international travelers, while international passengers utilizing this service will not have access to customs declaration services at the hub airport.
