Navi Mumbai Airport: Inaugural Flight to Abu Dhabi Launches International Operations

Navi Mumbai Airport: Inaugural Flight to Abu Dhabi Launches International Operations Navi Mumbai Airport: Inaugural Flight to Abu Dhabi Launches International Operations
Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) has embarked on a new operational phase, initiating its first scheduled international flight just seven months after starting domestic services.

On Wednesday, Air India Express became the inaugural airline to offer an international flight from the airport, establishing a direct connection between Navi Mumbai and Abu Dhabi with a service operating three times a week. This launch symbolizes the start of international operations at India’s newest greenfield airport and reinforces Mumbai’s second international gateway.

The service to Abu Dhabi carries significant importance. Gulf destinations have historically been among the primary international markets that Indian airlines pursue as they expand globally, thanks to robust demand from business, labor, and leisure travelers. By selecting Abu Dhabi as its premier international destination, Navi Mumbai Airport is tapping into one of the busiest international routes for Indian commuters.

“The commencement of our first scheduled international flight signifies a new phase in the journey of Navi Mumbai International Airport,” stated Arun Bansal, Chief Executive Officer of Adani Airport Holdings Ltd. (AAHL). “As we broaden our network with additional airline partners and destinations, we remain committed to providing seamless operations and a world-class travel experience, further solidifying Navi Mumbai’s role as a preferred international travel gateway.”

For Air India Express, this launch aligns with its dual-airport strategy for the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.

“We are thrilled to initiate international operations from Navi Mumbai, offering direct flights to Abu Dhabi, which provides a convenient new gateway to the UAE for travelers from the Mumbai Metropolitan Region,” noted Nipun Aggarwal, Chairman of Air India Express.

Since its opening in December of last year, NMIA has connected 46 domestic locations, catered to over 2.3 million passengers, and currently handles around 150 aircraft movements daily.

The inaugural international flight is also transporting the airport’s first global perishable export shipment, heralding the commencement of international cargo operations and establishing a new route for time-sensitive exports.

Local connectivity to Navi Mumbai airport remains a challenge

Although the airport has rapidly increased its aviation network, passengers still encounter difficulties in accessing it.

Numerous planned road and public transport connectivity projects are still underway, forcing many travelers to rely on private vehicles and app-based taxi services. Depending on their location within Mumbai, taxi fares to the airport can often exceed those to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport, making last-mile connectivity a crucial issue that authorities must address as passenger traffic escalates.

Enhancing airport access is anticipated to become increasingly vital as more airlines initiate services and passenger volumes grow.

What’s next for Navi Mumbai airport?

The launch of the Abu Dhabi flight is expected to be the precursor to multiple international routes from Navi Mumbai. Nevertheless, the subsequent phase of the airport’s development will be closely monitored.

Given the ongoing geopolitical uncertainties in parts of West Asia, the speed at which airlines introduce new Gulf destinations will remain in focus. Industry analysts will also pay attention to which international destination will be added next, how swiftly other Indian airlines will commence overseas operations from Navi Mumbai, and when foreign carriers will establish services from the airport.

These decisions will ultimately shape the timeline for Navi Mumbai International Airport’s evolution from a new airport into a significant international hub for western India.
