On Tuesday, June 16, the airline announced that this new fare is being introduced on a trial basis and is applicable only in Economy Class. This development expands Air India’s current fare structure, which consists of Value, Classic, and Flex fare categories that were launched in 2024.
With the ‘Basic’ fare, travellers are permitted to bring 15 kg of checked baggage and 7 kg of hand luggage. Additionally, this fare will feature a complimentary tea or coffee service during the flight. However, complimentary meals will no longer be part of the offering.
The airline stated, “The introduction of the ‘Basic’ fare reflects Air India’s pro-consumer strategy, acknowledging that different travellers have varying preferences. By unbundling certain services, Air India is allowing price-sensitive passengers to pay solely for their needs, while keeping full-service options available for those who prefer an all-inclusive experience.”
Travellers booked under the
new ‘Basic’ fare category can still personalize their journey by adding services as needed. For instance, passengers wishing to have a meal on board can pre-purchase one up to 24 hours before departure. Meal options will include Vegetarian, Non-Vegetarian, Jain, and Diabetic choices.
If a flight’s schedule changes or passengers are reassigned to another flight, pre-purchased meals will either be moved to the new flight or a refund will be processed.
The airline also emphasized that the Basic fare is an additional option and does not replace its current fare categories. Passengers can still select from Value, Classic, or Flex fares, which include complimentary meals and other bundled benefits.
“With the introduction of the Basic fare, Air India is further enhancing its offerings to provide a more user-friendly, fair, and customer-focused travel experience,” the airline mentioned.
At present, the Basic fare is only available on select domestic routes and can be booked through Air India’s direct channels, such as its website, mobile app, contact center, and airport ticketing offices.
Air India stated that it will assess customer feedback during the pilot stage before considering a broader rollout of the fare category.
