The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation has initiated a mid-life refurbishment program for its Blue Line trains, focused on improving passenger safety, comfort, and overall travel experience.

According to DMRC, this initiative aims to upgrade its oldest rolling stock (RS-1) trains with modern technology and enhanced facilities to maintain reliability and comply with current standards.

Under this program, DMRC is refurbishing 70 trains across the Red and Blue Lines in a phased approach. In the initial phase, 12 trains have already undergone upgrades, while 18 trains were refurbished in the second phase. Work on an additional nine trains is scheduled to commence soon, followed by another nine. The third phase will see 22 Blue Line trains being refurbished by November 2027.
The trains undergoing upgrades were introduced between 2002 and 2007 and have been in service for nearly 19 to 24 years. DMRC stated that these trains are being modernized with updated systems and features to align with the latest rolling stock standards.

The refurbishment comprises enhancements to both the interiors and onboard systems. Passenger areas and driver cabins have been repainted to combat wear and tear, while electrical panels have been upgraded to boost performance and reliability.

Newly installed systems include IP-based Passenger Announcement and Passenger Information Systems (PA-PIS), CCTV systems, and LCD-based Dynamic Route Maps with display screens offering real-time route, time, and arrival information. These systems also facilitate communication between passengers and train operators during emergencies.

Safety enhancements feature the installation of a fire detection system outfitted with smoke and heat detectors in all coaches. DMRC has replaced older relays and miniature circuit breakers with advanced units to elevate operational safety.

Moreover, mobile and laptop charging points have been added throughout all coaches. New jumper cables and connectors have been installed to support upgraded systems and accommodate future improvements.

DMRC stated that this initiative is part of its wider effort to modernize older trains and align them with newer rolling stock standards, ensuring safe and reliable metro services.
