The ferries, named Kushavati and Salaulim, were recently inaugurated at the revamped Betim ferry ramp, under the leadership of Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant, according to authorities from the river navigation department.
Faster and more comfortable travel
The Panaji-Betim crossing is among the busiest river routes in Goa, frequented by both daily commuters and tourists.
Officials noted that the newly introduced ferries are larger than traditional vessels and come equipped with modern, cruise-like amenities. They boast twin 480-horsepower engines and utilize a hydraulic navigation and ramp operating system, superseding the older manual configuration.
Each ferry has the capacity to carry nearly 150 passengers and up to eight cars, effectively enhancing traffic flow between Panaji and Betim.
Commute time cut nearly in half
Regular commuters indicated that the new ferries have significantly expedited and streamlined travel.
“Absolutely the best. Previously, the journey took around six minutes; now it’s about three minutes,” Betim-based commuter Chetan Bhosle said, as reported by PTI. He also praised the improved cleanliness of onboard facilities.
Another commuter, Sandeep Dongrekar, remarked that the upgraded service would greatly benefit daily travelers due to enhanced amenities and a more pleasant experience.
Push for inland water transport
Officials mentioned that this initiative is part of the Goa government’s extensive plan to promote inland water transport as a quicker, more economical, and environmentally friendly travel alternative.
The improved ferry service is also anticipated to reduce vehicular pressure on the roads linking Panaji and Betim, particularly during peak traffic hours.
For visitors to Goa, the new ferries could provide a faster and more convenient means to traverse the Mandovi River while traveling between Panaji and the nearby areas of North Goa.
