The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has released a new weather alert for Jammu and Kashmir, predicting rainfall in the plains and snowfall in elevated areas during early April.

Tourists intending to visit the Union Territory are advised to exercise caution, as unstable weather conditions are anticipated to continue in the coming days. These conditions are expected to persist until April 10 due to an active western disturbance.

Weather Changes Driven by Western Disturbance
According to the IMD, the Western Himalayan region is likely to experience intermittent precipitation, with overcast skies dominating the Union Territory. Light to moderate rainfall, along with fresh snowfall at higher elevations, is forecasted.

Weather observers have indicated that a significant western disturbance is set to affect the region within the next 36 hours, promising widespread rainfall and snowfall.

In a post on X, Kashmir Weather alerted residents about the forthcoming Western Disturbance in the Union Territory. “A strong Western Disturbance is about to impact Jammu and Kashmir over the next 36 hours, bringing extensive moderate to heavy rainfall across the UT. Higher altitudes and mountain passes, including Zojila, Sinthan Top, Mughal Road, Sadhna Top, and Razdan Top, are expected to see new snowfall,” it stated.

Reasons for the Abrupt Weather Change

Experts link the quick shift in weather to a new western disturbance that has originated from the Mediterranean region. This system is contributing moisture to the Himalayas, which is resulting in rainfall in the plains and snowfall in the mountainous regions.

Affected Areas to Note

Popular tourist spots like Gulmarg, Sonamarg, and Pahalgam are likely to encounter new snowfall. Meanwhile, rainfall is anticipated across the Kashmir Valley and some parts of Jammu. High-altitude passes may see slippery roads and reduced visibility, which could impact travel.

Rain and snow are expected to affect road transport, especially in hilly and mountainous regions. Poor visibility and slick conditions may lead to temporary road closures or delays on major routes.

Travel Advisory for Visitors

Authorities are urging travelers to remain vigilant due to changing weather conditions. Here are some of the recommendations:

– Regularly monitor real-time weather updates

– Exercise caution and avoid unnecessary travel to high-altitude areas

– Bring sufficient winter clothing and essentials

– Be prepared for potential delays or cancellations

– Plan itineraries with some flexibility
