Srinagar Airport Set for Partial Closure in July and Full Shutdown in October

Srinagar International Airport is planning to suspend all flight operations for 15 days, starting October 1, and will enforce recurring weekly closures from July to September as part of an extensive runway improvement project.

This proposed two-week suspension coincides with the Durga Pooja holiday season, posing a considerable threat to the tourism sector in Jammu and Kashmir. Additionally, it is expected to affect medical travel, compelling patients from Kashmir to undertake longer journeys by road for specialized healthcare in major cities.

  • From July to October, the runway will be closed for two days each week, likely on Mondays and Tuesdays, which may result in flight cancellations.
  • From October 1-16, a complete runway shutdown is suggested; standard flight operations would be halted during this period. Passengers can confirm the final NOTAM and airlines’ schedules as the date approaches.

What this means for travellers

The autumn season in Kashmir (from September to October) is usually one of the peak times for tourism. The weather is generally pleasant, with daytime temperatures ranging from 15°C to 25°C and relatively less rainfall compared to the summer months. On operating days, flight options may be limited, and fares could rise.

How to reach Srinagar if flights are affected

If flying directly to Srinagar is not possible, rail and road options are available. Srinagar can be accessed via the Udhampur–Srinagar–Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) and National Highway 44, the main route connecting the Kashmir Valley to the rest of India.
