Health professionals suggest that simple strategies like staying well-hydrated, taking regular breaks, and maintaining proper posture can mitigate the chances of travel-related back discomfort, ensuring a more enjoyable holiday.

As many individuals flock to hill stations in Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand to evade the sweltering temperatures in northern India, long trips have become a common aspect of summer adventures. Regardless of the mode of transport, remaining in the same position for extended periods, hauling heavy luggage, and interrupting regular physical activities can exert additional pressure on the spine, resulting in pain, stiffness, and muscle tension.

Dehydration during travel in the summer can further heighten the risk of back pain by affecting spinal discs, which need proper hydration to function as effective shock absorbers. Therefore, staying hydrated is as crucial as taking the time to stretch during lengthy journeys.
Travelers should aim to drink about three to four liters of water daily during summer journeys and curtail excessive intake of tea and coffee, as they may contribute to dehydration.

Packing wisely can significantly impact your comfort. Opting for lightweight rolling luggage instead of cumbersome duffel bags minimizes strain when lifting and maneuvering your bags. Additionally, wearing supportive walking shoes or sneakers instead of flat sandals or flip-flops can provide enhanced support for your back and lower limbs throughout lengthy travel days.

Individuals with chronic back issues, osteoporosis, or previous spinal injuries should continue taking their prescribed medications, and practice basic back-strengthening or stretching exercises while traveling. If muscle tightness develops during the journey, applying warmth and gentle stretching can alleviate stiffness and enhance blood circulation. Experts also suggest exercising during the cooler parts of the day, preferably early in the morning, while on vacation.
