For years, Goa has served as a getaway for Indians seeking to unwind. Now, the state aims to encourage people to reconnect with work.

This week at Baga Beach, beach shacks, which are typically synonymous with sunsets and vacations, morphed into collaborative workspaces for startup founders, freelancers, creators, students, and remote workers during the inaugural Goa Shackathon. This initiative by the Government of Goa is designed to position the state as India’s leading workation destination.

The idea is straightforward: if work can occur anywhere, why should offices be confined to bustling metros and traditional corporate environments?
Throughout the two-day event, participants took calls with views of the Arabian Sea, engaged in AI workshops, networked with fellow entrepreneurs, and took part in sessions led by creators discussing the future of work.

“Goa is evolving from traditional tourism towards a strong, future-oriented digital economy,” stated Goa’s Minister for Information Technology, Electronics & Communications and Tourism, Rohan A. Khaunte. “By empowering creators, digital nomads, and tech startups, we are ensuring that Goa becomes a prime sandbox for the changing landscape of work in India.”

This initiative arises as remote work and creator-driven careers are transforming how young professionals view work-life balance and employment. More workers are placing a greater emphasis on flexibility, quality of life, and community over traditional office norms.

The Shackathon mixed workation culture with dialogues surrounding technology and entrepreneurship. Sessions varied from communication and voice modulation workshops to discussions on AI, robotics, and multimedia tools.

A standout moment was a live demonstration featuring humanoid robot Nino, introduced by Akanksha Anand, Director of Sirena Technologies—highlighting the event’s ambition to intertwine technology with lifestyle.

Panel discussions delved into the concept of “Designing from Goa,” emphasizing how the state’s unique lifestyle and creative environment are inspiring entrepreneurs and designers to launch businesses locally rather than moving to larger cities.

For many attendees, the allure extended beyond mere aesthetics.

“The Shackathon is a fantastic initiative, as it enables professionals to complete their work and quickly enjoy the beach,” shared Deepak Pathania, a founding member of the Creative Community of Goa. “Witnessing a thriving office-like atmosphere within a beach shack will surprise and motivate people.”

For some, the belief extended beyond just a two-day affair. Raghav Chaudhry, founder of Ethical AI Studios, relocated his startup from Uttar Pradesh to Goa this year.

“Participating in both days reinforced that I made the right decision,” he remarked. “I’ve connected with so many incredible individuals who will be instrumental in our mission to develop ethical and compliant AI.”

The state government is optimistic about the economic implications of this concept. Remote workers and digital nomads tend to stay longer, spend more, and contribute more consistently to local economies compared to transient tourists.

Goa already boasts appealing lifestyle perks—climate, culture, and connectivity—that attract remote workers. The challenge now lies in whether the state can develop the infrastructure and ecosystem necessary to maintain that energy year-round.

The Shackathon served as a two-day demonstration of its potential. Whether Goa fulfills that promise is the key takeaway for attendees.
