EU relaxes travel restrictions for Assam, permits unrestricted movement in most regions, according to CM Himanta Biswa Sarma.

The European Union has updated its travel advisory for Assam, lifting the restrictions previously placed on its citizens visiting the state, as announced by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Saturday (June 20).

In a post on X, Sarma termed this news as “uplifting for Assam,” mentioning that it aligns with similar relaxations made by Australia and Japan. He remarked that this decision signifies increasing international trust in the state’s safety and stability.

“Following Australia and Japan, EU member states have now updated their travel advisories and eliminated restrictive guidance for their citizens traveling to the state,” Sarma expressed, expressing his gratitude to EU Ambassador to India Hervé Delphin for facilitating the process.

As per information from the state government, the revised advisory was shared by the EU Ambassador with the Assam Chief Secretary and became effective on Friday.

Citizens from all 27 EU member nations can now travel to most areas of Assam without any restrictions. However, the advisory still applies to three districts—Charaideo, Tinsukia, and Sivasagar—where the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSPA) is still applicable.

The Chief Minister mentioned that this development is a result of discussions between the Assam government and international diplomatic missions following the Advantage Assam 2.0 investment summit held in 2025.

He noted that this change is anticipated to enhance tourism, trade activities, and exchanges between Assam and Europe. Sarma also stated that the state government will concentrate on improving tourism infrastructure, which includes homestays, eco-tourism facilities, and digital services for visitors.
