The latest update, published on July 21, sees India ranked alongside Algeria and Mauritania, with passport holders having visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to 55 countries.
India’s ranking falls
India began 2026 in 85th place and climbed to 75th in the February edition, marking its highest rank in recent times. However, this upward trend was short-lived. The country dropped to 78th in May and has now descended three more spots to 81st.
The new ranking indicates a slight decrease in travel freedom. Indian passport holders were able to access 56 destinations visa-free in February, but the latest edition counts only 55.
Understanding the Henley Passport Index
The Henley Passport Index evaluates 199 passports based on the number of destinations their holders can visit without prior visa requirements. The rankings utilize exclusive data from the International Air Transport Association (IATA) and encompass 227 travel destinations globally.
This year’s edition celebrates the 20th anniversary of the index. Over the past two decades, the average number of destinations reachable without a prior visa has nearly doubled, increasing from 58 in 2006 to 108 in 2026.
Singapore retains its lead
Singapore continues to hold the title of the world’s most powerful passport, allowing visa-free access to 192 locations. Japan, South Korea, and the United Arab Emirates share the second spot, providing access to 188 destinations.
The UAE registered the most significant leap in the latest rankings, ascending three places since January. Sweden holds the third position, offering access to 187 destinations, while the United States has slipped to 10th place, with visa-free entry to 180 destinations.
India’s passport ranking through the years
India’s passport ranking has seen significant fluctuations over the last two decades. It was in 71st place in 2006, fell to 90th in 2021—its lowest point during this time. The country improved to 80th in 2024, dropped to 85th in 2025, briefly ascended to 75th earlier this year, and now rests at 81st in the most recent edition.
