The Central Railway has enhanced 10 local train services in Mumbai, upgrading them from 12-car to 15-car rakes starting Monday, July 20. These improved services will run on the Main Line connecting CSMT, Ambarnath, Kalyan, Badlapur, and Karjat.

This initiative aims to alleviate congestion by boosting the passenger capacity of these trains by approximately 25%. In a confirmation on X, Central Railway stated, “Comfort now upgraded to 15 coaches! Selected suburban services have been upgraded from 12-car to 15-car, enhancing daily travel for millions of commuters.”

With this enhancement, the total number of 15-car suburban services on the Central Railway has risen to 32, as stated by Dr. Swapnil Nila, Chief Public Relations Officer (CPRO) of Central Railway, in an interview with The Indian Express.
However, the total count of suburban services will stay at 1,820.

According to Nila, all 10 upgraded train services will commence operations on the Main Line from today. “These services will run on the CSMT-Karjat South East line and will greatly benefit passengers commuting to and from Ambarnath/Badlapur/Karjat. The addition of three more coaches per service will enhance the capacity by 25%,” he explained to the publication.

The first 15-car services in Central Railway’s Mumbai suburban network were launched in October 2012 with a fleet of 16 trains. An additional six services were introduced in March 2019, bringing the total to 22 prior to this latest enhancement.
