Over 4,000 Flights Delayed and 100+ Canceled Nationwide: Significant Impact on Major Airports and Airlines Over 4,000 Flights Delayed and 100+ Canceled Nationwide: Significant Impact on Major Airports and Airlines

Several of the nation’s busiest airports, including Hartsfield–Jackson Atlanta International Airport, O’Hare International Airport, Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport, San Francisco International Airport, and Newark Liberty International Airport, as well as airports in New York, experienced widespread disruptions.

Which airports are most affected

Today, Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport logged 121 delays and 13 cancellations, marking the highest number of cancellations for the day. Chicago O’Hare experienced 337 delays and 6 cancellations, while Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta reported 290 delays and 4 cancellations.

In New York City, John F Kennedy International Airport faced 123 delays and 5 cancellations. Miami International Airport registered 130 delays and 3 cancellations, whereas Los Angeles International Airport noted 162 delays and 2 cancellations. Dallas/Fort Worth encountered 319 delays and 1 cancellation.

O’Hare International Airport, one of the busiest in the country, recorded 43 cancellations and 181 delays, while Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport reported 7 cancellations and 379 delays as of April 18.

Major airlines affected by the disruptions

Today, Southwest Airlines was the hardest hit, reporting 730 delays and 2 cancellations. American Airlines had 542 delays and 2 cancellations, while Delta Air Lines documented 422 delays and 9 cancellations. SkyWest Airlines noted 345 delays and 10 cancellations, and United Airlines experienced 228 delays and 11 cancellations.

On April 18, SkyWest Airlines faced significant impact, reporting 36 cancellations and 138 delays. United Airlines followed with 21 cancellations and 115 delays, while Delta Air Lines had 7 cancellations and 114 delays. Envoy Air cancelled 7 flights and delayed 86, and American Airlines recorded 5 cancellations with 341 delays.

Major causes for delay and cancellations

One of the primary reasons for these delays is poor weather conditions. Earlier this season, adverse weather caused over 12,000 delays and cancellations in a single day. On April 19, unstable spring weather intensified the issues. Thunderstorms, low cloud cover, and changing winds prompted air traffic controllers to slow down operations.

Additionally, heavy congestion at major hubs like O’Hare International Airport stretches flight schedules beyond the airport’s capacity. Simultaneously, airlines are facing their own operational difficulties, including tight aircraft rotations, crew availability issues, and overbooked schedules.
