The updated regulations undo the visa relaxation that was implemented in July 2024, when Thailand expanded visa-free access to 93 countries in an effort to revive tourism following the Covid-19 pandemic.
Under the new system, international travellers, including those from India, will now be permitted to remain in Thailand without a visa for a maximum of 30 days instead of 60 days. Those wishing to stay longer will need to seek extensions through immigration offices or choose alternative visa categories.
Thai officials indicated that the decision was influenced by worries that foreigners were reportedly exploiting the visa-exemption scheme for illegal employment, unauthorized business activities, visa overstays, and criminal conduct. Additionally, concerns regarding national security and confusion stemming from overlapping visa policies have been cited. Also Read: Planning a long drive? Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul mentioned that the government reassessed the policy to align it “more appropriately with the current circumstances” concerning both the economy and national security.
Thailand’s foreign ministry announced that stays under the revised system will now be determined on a country-specific basis, with some nations receiving shorter or longer exemption durations based on reciprocal agreements.
The new visa framework will take effect 15 days after its official release in the Royal Gazette, where legal and regulatory updates are communicated.
Thailand has stated that it will continue to promote long-term visa initiatives, including the Destination Thailand Visa (DTV), a five-year multiple-entry visa designed for remote workers, freelancers, and digital nomads.
